🚗 The Netherlands is one of the greenest countries in Europe, with its strong infrastructure and support programs that encourage the use of electric vehicles. If you want to save money in the long term and prefer an environmentally friendly transportation option, buying an electric vehicle in the Netherlands can be a logical choice.
🚙 The most important advantage of electric cars is that they have much lower carbon emissions. While the emissions from the combustion engines of gasoline cars can harm the environment, electric cars are environmentally friendly with zero emissions. Electric cars are charged at a lower cost than gasoline cars. In addition, electric vehicles usually have lower maintenance costs because their engines have fewer moving parts.
🚕We bought a second-hand Renault Zoe in February 2024 due to both government incentives and fuel prices. The car is a 2020 model and has 21,000 km. Finally, its price is 11,500 Euros. In this blog, you will find the current electric car market in the Netherlands, and subsidies for electric cars in the NL given when buying an electric car :)

🔌 Charging Stations and Infrastructure
🔌The Netherlands has one of the most extensive electric vehicle charging infrastructures in Europe. There are more than 90,000 public charging stations in the country. There are fast charging stations in almost every city and parking lot. It is also quite common to charge your car in a garage at home, but for those living in apartments, municipalities are installing additional charging stations on the streets.
If you have questions like 'How do I charge my electric car?' or 'Are there enough charging stations?', I can tell you from my own experience: There is a charging station on almost every street. We have never had any problems charging the car so far, so rest assured.
Vattenfall has an app called inCharge. With this app, you can see all charging stations, whether the charging stations are empty, and your past charging sessions. It is one of my most used apps in the Netherlands! 😊 You can also use this app in the Netherlands, Germany, and Sweden.

⚡️Market Share of EVs in the Netherlands
The market share of electric vehicles in the Netherlands is growing rapidly: 35% of new vehicles sold in 2023 were electric. Models such as the Tesla Model Y, Volkswagen ID.4, Kia EV6 and Renault Zoe are very popular.
💰Cost of Electric Vehicles
Second-hand electric vehicles, especially models such as the Renault Zoe or Nissan Leaf, can be found for prices ranging from 10,000 to 15,000 euros. New models usually range from 30,000 to 70,000 euros. Charging costs are around 4-6 euros per 100 km if you charge at home.
👨⚖️ Plans for the Future
The Netherlands currently has the highest density of electric vehicles and chargers per 100 km in the world. Moreover, the Netherlands' incentive policies are so successful that the cost of owning an electric car is now almost the same as owning a diesel or gasoline car. It is planned that at least 30 percent of new cars sold will be fully electric by 2025.
The Dutch government also has targets for the number of charging stations in the country. The government's goal is to have at least 400,000 charging points by 2030, and at least 200,000 of these will be fast charging points. In addition, the Dutch government aims to make all cars electric by 2050.
In line with these targets, some decisions have been made to be greener. In 2019, a budget of 250 million Euros was determined to promote electric vehicles. All aid has started to be provided as of 2020. There is annual support for electric vehicles from 2020 to 2025.

🚖 Tax Benefits
The first tax to mention is the purchase tax. That is, the tax we pay when buying a car. The purchase tax is calculated according to the carbon dioxide emissions of a car. The more economical the vehicle, the less purchase tax is paid. Therefore, there are also tax advantages for electric vehicles. These are as follows:
Until 2024 (including this year): Complete exemption from purchase tax.
In 2025, the purchase tax will be 360 euros per vehicle.
After 2025, the purchase tax will increase every year with inflation.
The second tax to mention is motor vehicle taxes. This tax group varies depending on the car. But generally, it is around 100-150 euros every 3 months. There is also a tax advantage in Motor Vehicle Tax for electric vehicles.
If you buy an electric vehicle until 2024 (including 2024), you are completely exempt from Motor Vehicle Tax.
There will be a 75% discount on motor vehicle tax in 2025. As of 2026, the full tax rate will be applied to all other vehicles.
💵 Incentive program
The incentive program works as follows: First, you buy the electric car, then you apply via the link I will share below. Don't forget to have the documents given to you when you make the application :)
Total Budget and Things to Consider
Budget allocated for new cars: 67 million euros
Support allocated for second-hand cars: 29 million euros
Attention! If the budget runs out, you cannot apply for support for that year. The support for electric vehicles ran out very quickly in 2023. A similar situation may occur in 2024. Since the support budget is limited, it is very important to apply as soon as you buy a car. If you do not apply early, the support budget may run out and you may not be able to receive the incentive for that year. Therefore, following the incentive program and applying quickly when buying an electric vehicle is a very critical step.
Aid Amounts
If you buy a new electric car: 2,950 euros aid
If you buy a second-hand electric car: 2,000 euros aid
There is also a website where you can see how much money is left in this incentive program. You can find the link below.

👨💻 How to get the incentive?
Since the support amounts change depending on the year, it is necessary to follow this carefully. The numbers I mentioned (2000 euros for second-hand cars and 2950 euros for new cars) are for 2024. Therefore, you need to have bought the car in 2024.
The list price of your car must be between 12,000 euros and 45,000 euros. The list price also corresponds to the zero value of the vehicle. There is a great website of the highways where you can see the list prices and current prices of the cars. You write the license plate of the car you want on this website. Both the current price and the 0 price of the car appear. Price link from the license plate: https://ovi.rdw.nl/
Naturally, the vehicle you buy must be in your name and you must have a legal home address in the Netherlands.
The range of your electric vehicle must be at least 120 kilometers.
The support will be transferred to you after your application is approved, but the state wants the car to remain in your name for three years. If you sell the car before this period, you must notify this and pay back a portion of the support you received proportionally. The total period for which the car must remain with you is 36 months.
Finally, there are 2 important conditions to consider when buying an electric vehicle below. Knowing these conditions before buying the car is very useful in order to benefit from the incentive program.
For example, if you sell your electric car after eighteen months, you will have to pay back half of the support you received. Because you will have kept the car for 1.5 years.
During these three years, you should not transfer the car to your partner, family or even a relative. In this case, you will have to pay back some of the support. In short, you should keep the car you bought for more than three years :)
